What do all the settings do for the Whistle App on Google TV?

The Whistle App for Google TV has several settings. Some have affect on how the match is displayed and some on how to link match on the TV and secure the App.

1. Protect settings with PIN

This setting allows you to protect the settings with your own PIN. Once you enter and confirmed your 4 digit PIN, you still have to go all the way to the bottom and hit the save button before changes come into play. When a new PIN is entered, the next time you come to the settings screen you have to enter the PIN number. Caution: if you can't remember the 4 digit PIN, don't contact us, because we don't know either. Only option you have is to remove the App and install it again.

2. Use countdown timer

By default the match time counts down. Deselect this to have it count up.

3. Period timer shows planned played match time

By default Whistle will count the timer per period. For some sports, like soccer, the period timer needs to count up and needs to keep on counting, over all periods. This means that when your in the second period, the timer adds the planned time of the first period and continues counting.

For example: you have two periods of 45 minutes. In the first period you have extended the playtime by 2 minutes by adding (unplanned) time. In the second period the timer starts counting by starting with 45:01 instead of 00:01. The additional time was not plannend and therefore not included in the period time. Again: mainly for soccer (voetbal).

4. Show number of cards per team during match

When this option is selected the match screen shows per team the cards that were entered by the referee.

5. Show remaining penalty time for first upcoming card per team

When this option is selected the match screen displays cards that have a penalty time counting down. If a 5 minute card was added and 1 minute later a 2 minute card, it will first show only the countdown timer for the 2 minute card and as soon as that one is ended it continues with the 5 minute card (and the time that is still remaining).

6. Linking PIN for this TV

Everyone can scan the Whistle QR Code on the TV and share that link with others, via WhatsApp for example. What you probably don't want is that someone links the TV, while a person standing next to the TV can't. Because it's so easy to link the TV, someone could abuse it, even when they're not near the TV.

To prevent this, Whistle works with a so called "linking PIN". This linking PIN is shown on the matchscreen by default and is generated randomly just once. This linking PIN is required when someone uses the url (that was shared by WhatsApp for example) to link the TV. Before linking, the App requires the user to enter the linking PIN. If entered incorrectly, the TV will not link.

7. Unlink 2 minutes after match has ended

When the TV is linked to a match, it will not accept any other linking requests. For this reason Whistle automatically unlinks the TV from the match 2 minutes after the match has ended. When this option is turned off, you have to do it manually or select the force option (see below).

8. Always ask for PIN when linking with this TV

By default the user only has to enter the linking PIN when he or she uses an external link (URL) to link the TV. When scanning the QR Code with the Whistle App to link the TV, you don't have to enter the linking PIN. The idea is that you have to be near the TV in order to scan the QR Code. To make it more strict, this option can be turned on and the user has to enter the PIN always.

9. Refresh linking PIN automatically

The linking PIN only gets generated when started for the first time. Very occasionally it will be refreshed, but that can take a long while. In order to make the linking process more strict, you can select this option and Whistle will refresh the linking PIN either every two hours or on a daily basis. This prevents users from taking a photo from the TV with the QR Code and the linking PIN on the screen and remotely try to link their moatch to the TV.

10. When linked, force linking to other match

When someone is linked to the TV, but forgets to starts the match, walks away after starting the match or making abuse of the functionality, this could prevent someone from using the TV to track the match progress. When this option is selected the Whistle TV App will accept new link requests, even when a match is still in progress. This could also have a negative effect when the TV is displaying actual match progress and someone (accidentally) links the TV during this match.

11. Show linking PIN on match screen

By default the linking PIN is shown on the screen. The linking PIN is only a small hurdle to prevent users from accidentally linking with the TV. To make it more strict, the linking PIN can be removed from the match screen. If you still want to know what the linking PIN is, you can see it in the settings.

12. Ticker tape textmessage

The tickertape text message is used to display on the bottom of the screen and scrolls slowly from right to left.
